Three Simple Rules to Get Rid of Clutter
Has this happened to you? You’re hurrying out for an important appointment and struggling to find your keys. You look around, and there’s junk all around you – old mail, stacks of books, and a pile of clothes. You search for several minutes and realize you’re already late. Another opportunity lost.
Clutter can cause a lot of stress and make you feel like you’re not in control. It can make you feel tired and lethargic. It makes thinking difficult. Having a cluttered home can affect your social life and make you feel embarrassed.
Clutter can cause the release of cortisol. Prolonged exposure to this hormone can have negative effects such as impaired cognitive performance, decreased bone density and muscle tissue, high blood pressure, suppressed immunity, increased abdominal fat, and other health problems.
You need to get rid of clutter
Cleaning is easier if you have less junk around. This is especially important if you suffer from allergies or asthma. When you keep things in order, you can easily detect and get rid of dust, mold, and insect infestation which can cause a lot of health problems if left unchecked.
Thinking about de-cluttering your home or workspace can be overwhelming. That’s why you shouldn’t think too much about it and just do it right away. There are several tricks you can try to keep your stuff in order.
The 10-minute rule
You may feel powerless when facing a whole lot of mess. You can set your timer and dedicate ten minutes of your time each day and do what you can. Just dive in and leave the rest for the following day. You’ll be done with everything before the week ends.
Find 10 things to get rid of
Chances are, you have 10 things lying around that you no longer need or forgot you even owned. You can sell, recycle, or give them away and free yourself of more clutter.
Implement the 1-minute rule
If doing something that will help keep your place in order takes less than one minute, then do it right away. For example, little things like hanging an article of clothing, putting a book back on the shelf, and throwing a piece of trash will take less than a minute, getting these things done right away will help save a huge chunk of your time than dealing with a pile of mess.
