Smash Cakes!

When Miss Sassy Pants turned one, I hadn’t heard of a smash cake. She got a cupcake with Elmo on it, freaked out over the candle flame, smooshed it, loved it, and that was all.
The Animal was born five years later, and smash cakes had become all the rage. So, of course, I had to participate. Determined to make my own instead of paying someone to make something that he would simply destroy, I labored over how to make it look and how to include it best in pictures.
I made a simple cake (just round with a one), and he hated it. In fact, he was totally grossed out and still is grossed out by anything bread-related.
But Flash will be one in just six months, and I’ll have a chance to do it all over again! This time, I’m excited to have some guidance from Betty Crocker and their Smash-Tastic! Smash Cake guides.
On the Betty Crocker site, there are tons of really awesome (and cute, mind you) ideas for how to make that first birthday smash cake awesome.
Check out the Peas and Carrots cake — how smart is this? With the addition of yogurt, carrots, and peas, baby is getting some nutritional “stuff” too! Plus, the peas make a really adorable garnish.
And my other favorite? The Confetti Cake Stack. I love that it’s teeny and cute all at the same time. This would surely keep me (and other parents) from feeling like we’ve wasted really tasty cake on a smear-fest.

We never did smash cakes, I just planned that my kids would smash the piece that I gave them. However, all three of mine were dainty and wanted utensils to eat with!! How embarrassing!
I think I was sort of sucked into it because everyone else was doing it. But it is kinda fun! (And totally not embarrassing – that’s adorable!)
