Quiet Place

Quiet Place

I am participating in the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge. Today’s letter is Q.

It’s Easter weekend, and tomorrow marks the most exciting day on the Christian liturgical calendar: the resurrection of Christ. I will admit that I have not allowed myself to be as immersed in the Easter season as I should have. As always, I have put too much emphasis on worldly issues rather than taking the time to find a quiet place and read, think, and commune with God.

But in this quiet moment that I have as I type this — the kids are asleep, the baby’s first birthday party is over, the dryer is running with its soothing noise — I took a few moments to read through the four Gospels and their version of the resurrection of Christ.

What excitement and confusion on that Sunday morning. The ladies had gone to apply spices and oils to their Lord’s body only to find him missing and an angel in his place. I would imagine they were horribly frightened. In fact, the scripture tells us that they didn’t tell anyone at first because they were too afraid (Mark 16:8). So many thoughts must have been swirling in their heads. I try to put myself in their shoes, but I can’t. I have no realm of understanding of their fear, pain, and hope.

The story in the Gospels continues and tells us that Jesus then appeared to two of the disciples as they walked to Emmaus (Luke 24: 13-35). They didn’t even recognize him at first because, according to the scripture, their eyes wouldn’t allow them to see.

This idea reminds me of what we do when we should believe something but our minds won’t allow it. It doesn’t seem right, so we just shut out the thought. When they finally do realize who they have seen and talked to, they are amazed.

The end of the story tells us that Jesus gave them a promise. He promised that he would be with them forever. How amazing for them to not only get to see him again — and see the prophecies fulfilled — but to also know that he would be with them until the end of time.

  1. I’ve been enjoying some quiet time in the kids’ room as they go to sleep in the evenings. My housework has suffered, but I think my brain is enjoying the solitude and lack of demands.
