MyRobot Friend from Leapfrog
Miss Sassy Pants and I had the opportunity to try out Leapfrog’s MyRobot Friend on my iPhone. This game is more than just a game: it’s a learning tool!
When we first logged in to the app, Miss Sassy Pants was given a chance to name her robot. She went with “Robot A.” Then, we began working through the levels together.
The game is easy enough for smaller kids (and fun, too – the Animal just loved looking at the “bobot”) but challenging enough for kids like Miss Sassy Pants – who, at 8, can get a little bored if something doesn’t keep her thinking.
In each level, the robot needs to make it from point A to point B. But, the player takes the role of the programmer and “writes” a program for the robot to follow. The program is in the form of “command cards.” The child decides how to tell the robot how to move on the board. The board consists of blocks, and the cards (to start) are numbered. If there are 5 blocks to walk across, the child chooses the card with a 5 on it. This, then, makes the robot move 5 blocks to the destination.
As the levels progress, players are given more options for the program. Directional cards are added to the command cards, and now, the player has to know which way is South, North, East, and West. In one level, the player begins using negative numbers to have the robot go backwards. (Even I was thrown by the directions! I’m no math genius, but this game is nicely challenging. I’m going to go with the idea that I’m just so smart that I was reading too much into it? Go with me, people.)
I loved watching Miss Sassy Pants figure out the correct combinations so that she could get Robot A to move where he needed to go. In fact, when she got frustrated at herself for choosing the wrong number, I smiled. She needs the challenge, and Leapfrog’s MyRobot Friend provides it for her.
And, as an added bonus, as you earn coins for making it through the levels, you can even update your robot’s wardrobe!
