Melabeth the Vampire: A Review
Confession: I’m afraid of Dracula. No seriously. I’m literally afraid he’s going to come in to my room and attack me while I sleep. In fact, if I think about him too much in the dark while I’m trying to fall asleep, I have to pull the covers over my head and try to think of rainbows and candy.
Silly, right? I know he’s not real, and I know that he can’t get me. That’s why it was surprising when I was so entranced by Melabeth the Vampire, the first in a series by E.B. Hood.
Melabeth the Vampire follows a young girl, Melanie Elizabeth, who was killed in the 70s because of a very bad decision her father made. She trusts no one and with good reason. When she wakes up in a grave and must dig her way out, the reader begins to learn all about vampires.
Since Melabeth (she combined her first and last human names to form her new vampire name) is new to being a vampire, we have a chance to learn along with her. Why can she move so quickly? And will she be killed by a silver bullet or garlic or a wooden stake? If she bites someone, do they automatically turn into a vampire?
Melabeth starts on her quest to go back to the men who hurt and killed her — including her father — to exact her revenge. Along the way, she makes a few friends and learns a bit about how to control her anger and attitude.
If you’re looking for an interesting read (in the Young Adult arena), you’ll love Melabeth the Vampire.
I would be remiss if I didn’t point out that at first, I was distracted by some of the editing errors of the text. Commas, semicolons, and fragments run rampant. Once I was able to get in to the story and past the frustration of the grammatical problems, I really enjoyed myself. But you know me: ever the English teacher, I was dying to pull out my red pen.
You can “meet” EB Hood and learn more about his book in his first YouTube video here:
I was given a copy of Melabeth the Vampire in exchange for my honest review. There was no compensation. All opinions are 100% my own.

I love vampire stories! That universe appeals to me way more than the current fascination with zombies. I’ll have to keep an eye out for this one.
I don’t mind a little scary vampire once in awhile (O.K., mostly just Twilight), and I try to avoid reading anything too supernatural since I am in bed alone most nites ,lol. Sounds like a great book for my sister though – I will have to recommend it to her!
