Howard B. Wigglebottom on Yes or No: A Review

Learning when to say “Yes” or “No” seems like a simple task. But when you’re a kid, and you’re learning to navigate social interactions with friends and adults, figuring out the appropriate response for every situation isn’t too easy.

My 8 year old read the new book, Howard B. Wigglebottom on Yes or No, to her brother. In the book, they learned about Howard’s friend, Buzz, who had trouble knowing when he should say, “Yes” to things and when he should say, “No.”

Situations in the book ranged from peer pressure (Should I do what my friend wants me to do even if it’s wrong?) to potentially dangerous strangers (Should I take the candy from the nice looking stranger?).

The book broached the subject of whether or not to trust friends who have lied to us in the past. If your friend is guilty of tricking you all the time, should you trust him when he tries to get you to do something again?

And as a parent, I appreciated that the topic of talking to strangers was included. I have very social, talkative children who like to tell anyone and everyone about their day. The Animal is guilty of walking up to other moms at the library to get their help with puzzles. I’m happy that my kids are sociable, but they also need to learn that it’s not okay to talk to any person at any time.

I asked Miss Sassy Pants to tell me what she learned from the book and why she would recommend it to other readers:

I learned to always say, “No,” to people you don’t know — strangers. I think kids young or old should read this book so they remember to always say no to strangers.

If you’re looking for a book that will help your child(ren) understand the different situations where they may need to choose between saying, “Yes,” or “No,” be sure to check out Howard B. Wigglebottom on Yes or No.

All of the Howard B. Wigglebottom books include lessons and tips in the last few pages. Miss Sassy Pants was very receptive as a younger child to Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen — a skill all kids need to know!
