How long should my blog post be?
How long should my blog post be?
I get asked this question a lot. I’d like to take credit for this awesome response, but this isn’t my analogy. Still the answer is the same:
Your blog post should be like a skirt: long enough to cover the important parts but short enough to be interesting.
When it comes to a blog post and length, often the answer to how-much-is-too-much or is-this-enough lies in the content and purpose of the post.
If you’re writing a how-to post, you can’t leave out any steps. This may require a longer post with a list of steps. That’s ok.
But telling the story of how you adopted your cat? Maybe we don’t need every single detail.
That said, if the details of that adopted cat are important to you, and you feel the need to share them: SHARE THEM.
The beauty of a blog and blog post is that it’s yours. Unless you’re being paid by a sponsor or given exact parameters to follow for said post, write what feels best for you.
I’m an underwriter. Generally it’s odd that I wouldn’t be exceptionally verbose considering I’m an English major and writer. My group of friends tend to wax rhapsodic about subjects. I just don’t. It’s rare that I have a really long blog post — or really long anything — and that’s my style.
My style is like that in life, too. I don’t do many things slowly. I met my husband and was engaged in less than 2 months. We had three kids over the span of 5 years. I multitask like a fiend and finish multiple major projects in the time it may take someone else to do just one. My ability to move quickly is both a blessing and a curse. So much gets accomplished but often I take on too much because I’m just certain I can finish all the things!
If you’re just beginning to write, don’t let the length of a post bog you down. Write what works well for you. There is many a blog writer who writes only paragraphs and is very successful where others write 1000s of words and have crazy amounts of followers, readers, shares.
So what’s your style? When you tell a story, are you typically one who offers up all the nitty-gritty details? Or are you more concise?

Love the analogy of the skirt. A great way to look at “length”. ha
