Enjoy the Carolina Renaissance Festival

Enjoy the Carolina Renaissance Festival

Years ago, one of my favorite fall traditions was to attend the Carolina Renaissance Festival in Huntersville, NC. I went with my friend, Jennifer, and we got henna tattoos and whooped and hollered at the knights and laughed at the ridiculous shows and perfectly inappropriate jokes. We visited with our friend, Renee, who actually played the Princess for a year or two. One time, Renee even had me “arrested,” and I was punished with a hanky lashing and forbidden to have chocolate for a month.

Jennifer and I were even brave enough to go with students to enjoy the festival, and we both speak with fondness now about our tattoos and the fun we had.

I seriously don’t remember the last time I went to the Carolina Renaissance Festival. I am wracking my brain to remember which of my four I was pregnant with because I went to get a henna tattoo and the gal offered to put it on my largely pregnant belly. (I opted for not having it on my stomach since I’d have to walk around with my shirt pulled up in order to let it dry. There’s nothing wrong with other folks doing that. I just didn’t want to.) After having kids, I couldn’t bring myself to take anyone so small to walk around all day, and my husband and I just didn’t find the time to break away and go. That will be changing this year.

Something for Everyone

The Carolina Renaissance Festival has something for everyone of all ages: food, games, shows, and more. Some folks choose to dress in the attire of the Renaissance. I’ve never done this, but I could find it super fun! Our kids will fall in love with the knights’ joust and horses, King and Queen, and all the silly goings-on of the festival.

I imagine that my boys will be especially entranced by the flame thrower or falconer. I can’t wait to take them now that they are a little older and able to “hang” with us better!

The soup/bread bowls and turkey legs are always a hit. But I admit that my favorite food is the candied roasted almonds. The first time I ever sampled them, I was in love!

  1. Yaas! Oh, I have such fond memories of us taking seniors in the “cheese wagon” to the RenFest to enjoy the day. The Tortuga twins! Zilch the Torysteller. Maybe we can meet up on the same day?
