Daily Devotions to Start Your Day

Daily Devotions to Start Your Day

There’s something about starting your day off with thoughtful reflection and prayer. To be completely honest, I’ve never made this a habit of mine. I’ve wanted to. I’ve read about folks who love starting with Bible study and prayer in the mornings, but I’ve either never made it a priority or I’ve never found the right resource. Daily devotions have been a goal of mine — to ground myself before starting my very typically chaotic day — and so I’m thankful to have had the chance to try out the app, Awakening to God.

There’s an app for that!

Easy enough to download onto my phone, Awakening to God (or ATG) provides a daily verse to ponder and a spot to fill in morning thoughts and goals and then evening reflection.

Considering I spend most of my day on a device of some sort, this set-up is absolutely perfect for me. I’m able to sit at the breakfast table, tune into the verse and thought for the day, and then come back later in the evening to think about how that verse did (or even didn’t) come to life during my day.

One feature that I really like about the app is the option to share the verse out on my social media channels. My church gals tribe is always so awesome about sharing recent verses we’ve found or enjoyed, so sharing with them will be easier going forward.

Additionally, the app keeps track of my morning and nightly journals so I can look back. Part of reflection is to review how far we’ve come. That reflective practitioner in me just loves this part of the process.

Other than the obvious opportunity to be in the Scripture and pause before starting my day, the ATG app is perfect for the busy person. We can’t really deny that in this day and age, everything is go – go – go. ATG’s daily devotion is completely possible to complete in 8 minutes a day. Perfect!

About the founders:

Gerald & Jeannie Long experienced success and wealth based on the values of the world and also the deepest grief and suffering from the death of two of their three children.  On their journey, God has revealed His grace and glory to them in extraordinary ways.  In particular, they’ve experienced how God is able to redeem the most painful areas of our lives and turn them around for good.  Gerard has caught a deep awareness of eternity and Jeannie has experienced God’s presence and glory when she was close to ending her own life.  Their marriage has triumphed when all seemed lost and they’ve learned invaluable lessons on their unbelievable journey.  And, they have a very clear message of God’s calling for each Christ follower to obey the Great Command and the Great Commission.

Why this app?

So why make this app? There is a purpose:

  • to inspire and encourage thousands of people in their walk with Christ (hopefully, leading to another ‘Awakening’ –
    see 2 Chronicles 7:14)
  • to raise the funds to: dig a well in 100 villages in India, provide 40,000 meals to widows and orphans, 15,000 mosquito nets and a medical team for immunizations, cataract operations and other services.

  1. That’s a spiritual way to start your day! Sometimes the verse may very well turn out to be your day’s mantra or something?

The link-tool I’m using for my “top then Thursdays” offers to include a bible verse – not sure at what point; maybe overtime somebody links up their post?

  2. I used to resist technology when it comes to things like meditation and daily reflection but I am coming around to seeing its value. That sounds like a great app!

  3. I need to try this. I have tried and failed so many times at having morning quiet time (or any quiet time with God during the day). I feel so guilty about it. Thank you for sharing this – sounds like the perfect app for busy people!
