Bookends. That’s what one friend said when she learned that our fourth was to be a girl. Our oldest is a girl. The two in between, boys.

So, I have bookends. For me, it’s the perfect rounding out of our family.

But my favorite part of having an older daughter and a younger daughter is the chance to do two things:

First, I’ll have had the chance to experience one girl go through all the drama of girl-hood/teenage girl-hood/young woman-hood. Because my 10 year old self and beyond managed to deal with a lot of angst, I’m tapping in to those experiences to help Miss Sassy Pants.

Miss Sassy Pants has always been a strong one. From the day she was born sunny side up instead of the “regular” way to her ability to walk in to any room and feel comfortable, make friends, take the lead, she’s amazed me. While we may butt heads here and there because — well — tweens, her spirit and heart are the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.

Now we have an almost 1 year old who will go through all of this “stuff” in her own way. We can’t tell quite yet if she’ll be as confident as her older sister or if she’ll be timid. Will she take a leadership role in all that she does or will she be an awesome team member? Regardless of how her personality develops, Miss Sassy Pants will have paved the way and shown me some of the ropes. Plus, she’ll be there as a sounding board.

Which leads me to the second thing: it will be interesting to see the relationship that grows between Miss Sassy Pants and Baby Diva. I have visions of the two of them giggling and shopping when they are 20 and 10. Like with my older sister (who is 8 wise years ahead of me), I suspect there will be times when Miss Sassy Pants takes Baby Diva to the movies and lunch. Baby Diva will adore her big sister and want to be everything she is…or so I suspect.

I am blessed to be their mom. I cannot wait to watch them grow every step of the way.

I’m participating in the A to Z Challenge. Come play!

  1. So sweet! My older brother and I have a 9 year age difference. It seemed like a lot when I was a kid, but now it’s nothing. We are pretty close and can talk to each other easily about lots of things.
