Best Apps for Toddlers and Preschoolers

With a new baby and a toddler, there are multiple times where I find myself unable to entertain my 2 year old. Now, before anyone says that I shouldn’t have to entertain my kid and he should figure out how to entertain himself, I hear you. But there are tons of times where I’m “stuck” on the couch nursing and the Animal is free to roam the house.

A few months ago, before Flash was born, I bought an iPad with the genius idea of being able to work while nursing. Instead, the iPad has become an overpriced toy for my children. While I could be horribly annoyed by this, I actually have found moments to be very thankful that I have this new device.

The Animal has learned how to work the iPad – I’m amazed how quickly he figured out how to maximize a screen, turn the iPad to work correctly with whatever app he’s using, and even use the “five finger” swipe. Woah. He’s going to be way more advanced with technology than even Miss Sassy Pants who is always teaching me something with the iPad (“We have them at school, Mom).

Because the Animal has actually spent some decent time with the iPad, I’ve had a chance to really decide which apps are best for him. Here is my list of best apps for toddlers and preschoolers…and believe me, I’ve made sure they’re all educationally sound.

best apps for toddlers

ZooTrain – We love Zoo Train because not only does it allow the Animal to put tracks together (problem solving) but it also lets him work with letters, complete “puzzles,” and enjoy music. ($.99)

Endless Alphabet – This app has cute little monsters that teach your kid new (and quite sophisticated) words. The word comes on the screen, the monsters “break it,” and your child pieces the letters back together. Then, the word is acted out by the monsters and defined. (Free)

Phone4Kids – A very simple app, this one gives your child multiple “games” to play. The free version has only six options: the weather, typing, a compass, a phone, coloring, and texting. You can spend just a little to get the other twenty-three options. (Free version or $.99)

Kids Doodle – This app simply allows your child to draw – but there are thirteen different options! It can look like a regular crayon or spray painting and more! (Free)

And then, of course, there’s YouTube. Now, you really HAVE to watch your child with this one so that they don’t watch inappropriate videos. We have found a few channels that we really like and that have some awesome and educational videos for our kids:

Kids TV 123 – We are in love with all of the phonics songs and (most recently) the planets songs.

Hooplakidz – There are lots of options here for nursery rhyme songs and other educational videos.

Pancake Manor – I personally think these are some of the more fun songs and videos – very catchy!

Bemular’s “The Planet Song” – the Animal is literally addicted to this song. Addicted. We watch it at least once a day.

What are some of your favorite apps for your kids? I’d love if you’d share with me!
