Beautiful Beasties Review & Giveaway

I have about a million pictures of my pets. Some are better than others. I’ve never been quite sure how to take the best picture of them, so I just point and shoot when I think they’re doing something cute.

However, I had the opportunity to read and review Beautiful Beasties: A Creative Guide to Modern Pet Photography by Jamie Pflughoeft. If you have pets and love taking pictures of them like I do, then you need to get this book.

Beautiful Beasties Book

The book begins with an awesome introduction about the history of pet photography. Pflughoeft then explains the different types of equipment you can use to capture the best pictures and the book follows through with examples of pet behavior, tips for working with different animals, achieving the best composition, dealing with pet photography challenges, and even how to go pro as a pet photographer.

I’m surely an amateur when it comes to picture taking, and my best pictures are accidents. I only have a Kodak EasyShare, but because of this book, I learned some information about ISO that always eluded me.

With some of the tips in my pocket, I headed outside to take a few shots of our dogs.

Here’s one of Lemonade hanging out with our son, whom we lovingly call, “The Animal.”

I know the broom in the background isn’t the most beautiful accent, but I thought I captured a pretty great moment of man’s best friend.

And here’s a handsome shot of our lab, Dug:

He has such a handsome profile, doesn’t he? The car in the background isn’t the most beautiful, but I still thought it was a great shot of our guy watching Daddy mow the lawn.

I’m excited to use the book for more tips and tricks when photographing my dogs. What I will say, too, is that the book has so many awesome tips that apply to more than just pets. Throughout, the author includes tips that would help any photographer . . . especially one like me who is just beginning to realize all that a camera can do.
