Vague Excerpt in my Daybook

Today I’m playing along again with the Axis of Ineptitude blogging prompts. The prompt today was “Vague Posting.” I decided to dig through some of my old daybooks to see if I could find any poetry or other text from something a billion years ago. I found this. Enjoy.

Axis of Ineptitude

July 28, 2009

He was tired of all this work the boss had been giving him. Tired of pushing around boxes and tired of answering to someone. He was just plain tired. But he scuffled his feet across that damn street anyway — gotta deliver the goods. Gotta deliver the goods.

Just then, a lady wearing a red coat shuffled up to him.

“Sir, ya got any idea where I can find 21st & Straight? I’m trying to meet my sister, but I’ve been all turned around here.” He shook his head. He had no desire to answer this lady. He simply grunted and kept walking.

She wouldn’t let him pass that easily. “Sir,” she said, stronger this time, “Sir, you gotta help me. I’ve gotta find my sister today so I can be with her when she goes to the doctor. It could be real bad news today.” This made him stop. He wanted so badly to ignore this annoyance, but clearly she was going to be persistent and clearly he needed to answer her. Especially if the doctor was involved. By God, it could be cancer! Or a baby! Or worse — she could be finding out she had a week to live!

So, he turned to the lady and said, “Go fourteen blocks that way ma’am. You’ll come right across it. No worries.”

He looked at her and waited for her, “Thank you.” It never came. She looked at him blankly. It was obvious she couldn’t hear him.
