Unicorn Horn: An Update

Unicorn Horn: An Update

I’m participating in the Blogging from A to Z Challenge for April. Today’s letter is U.

A while back, I shared a little secret: I am part unicorn.

Some may laugh and say I’m insane (they’re right), but I really do have a large lump on the left side of the top of my head. It happens to be right where my fontanels grew together. How do I know this? After I learned about these fontanels in anatomy as an 11th grader, I was weirdly obsessed with “playing” with them. How cool to find that spot where, as a baby, my skull went through so much transition.

In 1996, after I graduated high school, I was in a car accident. Luckily, my window was down, so my head only hit the window casing. Other than being in some pain after the incident, I didn’t think much about it.

Until 2008 when one of my favorite students lovingly but carefully asked, “What’s that on your head?”

I realized at that point that I could no longer feel that fault line on my skull. I wondered when the last time was that I’d even tried.

Frantically, I began looking back at pictures. When did this large bump appear?

I cannot find a specific time, but I know it wasn’t there before Miss Sassy Pants was born. So, I’m guessing this unicorn horn is all her fault (she is pretty magical — I’ll give her the credit).

Oh, ye of little faith. I was serious!
Somewhat masked here by my hair.

Since discovering this bump, I’ve had two more babies. Yes, it has grown. So, I went to a plastic surgeon to see if we could do something about it.

The freakiest thing? He says that what I can see on my head is probably only about 30% of what actually exists. So, basically, I have the tip of an iceburg protruding from my forehead.

Surgery to remove my unicorn horn will be in early June of this year. I’ll have my head wrapped like Jack and Jill after they “broke their crowns,” and the doctor said I will probably look like I went a few rounds with Mike Tyson (the blood drains down).

Will I be sharing the results with you? You betcha. Am I a little worried that this bump is actually my genius, and it may disappear upon removal? A little.

The doctor doesn’t seem concerned that this is anything worse than some built-up fatty tissue. I really hope he’s right.
