90 Minutes in Heaven
What if you had a chance to see what was waiting for you on the other side? The other side meaning, beyond this life? Do you imagine that you would see your loved ones waiting for you? Do you suspect that you’ll see a bright light guiding you to the pearly gates?
And what if, after seeing the beauty of the next life, you were ripped away only to be back on this Earth yet in immense pain?
That’s what happened to Don Piper, author of 90 Minutes in Heaven.
Piper was traveling home from a convention when he was struck by a large truck and killed. For 90 minutes, he had no heart beat, but he did enter heaven.
And 90 minutes later, he returned to Earth a broken man. Broken in body and, for a time, broken in spirit.
In his book, he describes the joy he felt at seeing several of his loved ones who had left this Earth before he did.
And he describes the utter anguish of battling the broken body and lack of patience he had to endure after the fatal crash.
Piper’s account brought me a mix of fear and hope as I read. After reading what happened to him, I found myself worrying: What would happen to my family if this happened to me? A husband. 4 kids. What if I was stuck in the hospital as long as Piper was?
But after reading Piper’s description of heaven and seeing how happy he was to have had the opportunity to experience such joy, there’s also a hopeful anticipation of what heaven will truly be like once I have the chance to go.
