4 Things I've Learned about DIETS

4 Things I've Learned about DIETS

This week on Mamavation TV, we’re going to get to learn from Dr. Yoni Freedhoff who wrote The Diet Fix. The book focuses on all the things we’ve learned about diets that are probably wrong. I’m looking forward to hearing from Dr. Freedhoff because I know I’ve learned some things since my bootcamp, but there’s certainly more to learn.

Cluttered Genius

  1. You have to eat. As much as we feel like starving ourselves would actually benefit us more (and help us shed pounds), your body actually needs fuel to work. Just like any machine, your body must have the energy to move. If it doesn’t get what it needs, it won’t function as well. It feels like this is counter-intuitive, but you need to have the right balance of foods. See below:
  2. You need balance. We’re told to give up lots of things when we are looking to lose weight. “Carbs,” for example, get a bad rap. What I’ve learned is that there are actually some good carbs out there. Whole grains and fibrous fruits are examples of good carbs. Your body needs a balance of the food groups (remember the food pyramid?) in order to properly digest the nutrients and fuel that machine.
  3. You need to listen to your body. I lost my gall bladder in 2003 for really stupid reasons. I was a stressed out new teacher whose husband worked a very dangerous job. I didn’t exercise. My body was angry, and that anger came in the form of horrendous pain on my left side. The doctors assumed it was my gall bladder, and after a short series of tests just diagnosed me with gall bladder problems. After they removed it, the pain was still there. Now, I have problems digesting many foods. I must listen to my body and notice what reactions I have so that I can still have a good balance of foods to keep me going. Milk tends to bug me as does sugar. So, I watch my intake of these items.
  4. You need to pay attention. If you’re doing the three things I’ve listed above, you’re probably already paying attention. I like to keep track of my food, and I like using the MyFitnessPal app on my phone. It’s quick and easy, and it lets me save foods I eat on a regular basis. This makes inputting the information a little faster. However you do it, pay attention to what you’re putting in to your body and how your body reacts.

I’m no expert on diets (I’ll leave that to Dr. Freedhoff), but I do know what has been working for me. I lost a significant amount of weight after baby #3 just by eating, balancing the nutrition, listening to my body, and paying attention to all that I was doing.

What tips do you have for healthy diets?

  1. Listening to your body is so important! I think what works for someone often doesn’t work for someone else…we each have to listen to what our body is telling us it needs/can’t handle.

You have been a beast at the weight loss this year. So proud of you!

  2. I am paying attention – to the fact that I am not feeling well and know what you mean about what you put into your body makes you feel great or not.

Thanks for some of these tips, need to bookmark them!
